Choosing a wedding band to perform at probaly the most important ceremony of your life can be fraught with problems. There are several things you should be sure of before committing yourself. Please use our check list below to help ensure you make the right choice.

Cost

Check with your band exactly what the total cost for the day will be. There is very often extra charges for learning the first dance, setting up early, travel, lighting, performing beyond midnight, using their equipment for your speeches and even feeding performers (sometimes called a rider) Its normal to pay a deposit up front around 10% the balance just prior to the day or even on the night in cash. Make sure you keep all correspondence if you dont get a contract.

Booking

If you are booking a live band it makes sense to check with the venue first to see if there are any restrictions eg. Volume:- as many venues have sound limiters. Space:- is there sufficient space for the band to set up in.

Testimonials

Always check that the wedding band you are about to book has got good testimonials. Ask to speak to past clients.

Availability

A wedding band may say they are available but if you are booking a long time ahead what contingency plans do they have in place. A professional band will have the provision for “deps” or “stand ins” so that if in the event of illness or holidays they will always be able to cover.

Insurance

A wedding band should carry adequate public liability insurance. Check with the venue that what cover they have is adequate.

Equipment

A wedding band should have all its portable equipment tested once a year there will be a PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) certificate for this.

Agents

It may seem less hassle dealing with an agent and it may very well be! but make sure you know what and who you are getting and how much extra you are paying.
